   Every vinyl has a locked groove, the main purpose of which is to stop the stylus from crossing over the paper label area at the end of the record. But they’re also an opportunity for artists to use them creatively by pressing a small amount of music into this section.

   All vinyl records (at least as far as I know) end in a locked groove - this is done to protect the stylus from drifting onto the label, etc. A locked groove simply never advances; the groove changes from the spiral it was on the way in to a closed circle.

   May 08,  · Here’s the clean x groove shot. The white part is glare from the light, not dirt. You really can see the groove shape. It sort of reminds me of going down a water slide in Maui. The needle sure does thread an interesting path. But as you can see, a clean groove really helps. You don’t get much closer than this.
